About cappuccino
A cappuccino is priced almost entirely by what surrounds it. Coffee beans are a global commodity that costs roughly the same everywhere, so nearly all of the difference between a $1.50 cup and a $6.50 cup is local rent, wages and what the market will bear. That makes it one of the sharpest signals of local cost of living in the game.
Where South Africa sits
Of the 32 countries priced for cappuccino, South Africa ranks #24 from the top at $2.31, 37% below the median of $3.67.
South Africa has low prices in dollar terms but the widest gap in the game between price and affordability: measured in work time at the average wage, its groceries cost far more than the dollar figures suggest. Fuel is regulated and adjusted monthly by the government. VAT is 15% with a defined basket of basic foods zero-rated, a list that is explicitly a poverty measure and has been publicly debated and extended over the years. South Africa is the strongest argument in this dataset for not reading dollar prices as a cost of living: on the dollar column it looks affordable, and on the work-time column it is the hardest country in the table.
