About natural gas (100 kWh)
Gas is the one energy price that still depends on geography, because moving it needs either a pipeline or a liquefaction plant at one end and a regasification terminal at the other. A country at the end of a pipe pays something close to the wellhead price; a country buying cargoes on the spot market pays whatever Asia and Europe are bidding that week. The 2022 European price shock, and the year of bills that followed it, was that distinction becoming visible.
Where Mexico sits
Of the 31 countries priced for natural gas (100 kWh), Mexico ranks #25 from the top at $3.60, 63% below the median of $9.80.
Mexico produces much of its own fresh food, keeping groceries cheap in dollar terms, but the peso has been comparatively strong in recent years, which lifts Mexican prices when converted. Fuel is taxed but has also been subject to periodic government caps. Food and medicines carry 0% IVA against a 16% standard rate, a true zero rate rather than an exemption, and one of the more far-reaching food carve-outs in the Americas. Between domestic production and a zero rate on groceries, the Mexican food column has very little in it beyond the cost of growing and moving the food itself.
