About milk
Milk is heavy, perishable and awkward to ship, so it is almost always produced close to where it is drunk. That makes its price a read on local farming costs rather than world markets, and in much of the EU on agricultural subsidies, which push retail prices below what production alone would imply.
Where Norway sits
Of the 32 countries priced for milk, Norway ranks #2 from the top at $2.45, 1.6× the median of $1.54.
Norway is an oil exporter with some of the most expensive petrol in the world, which is not a contradiction: fuel is heavily taxed as climate policy, and the revenue funds the sovereign wealth fund. Food is expensive too, protected by high agricultural tariffs. VAT is 25%, among the highest anywhere, though food is charged at a reduced 15%, which is still higher than the standard rate of several countries in this table. Norway is where the two halves of this dataset diverge most: it has the resources to be a cheap place to drive and has deliberately chosen not to be.
