Pricele #73: Natural gas (100 kWh) in Bangladesh 🇧🇩

Gas is the one energy price that still depends on geography, because moving it needs either a pipeline or a liquefaction plant at one end and a regasification terminal at the other. A country at the end of a pipe pays something close to the wellhead price; a country buying cargoes on the spot market pays whatever Asia and Europe are bidding that week. The 2022 European price shock, and the year of bills that followed it, was that distinction becoming visible.

Bangladesh has the lowest hourly earnings in the game, which makes the work-time column the only one worth reading closely: a dollar price that looks trivially cheap can still be an afternoon's pay. Domestic rice and vegetables are cheap; everything that arrives by ship is not, and the taka has lost a large share of its dollar value since 2022, so a converted figure ages quickly. VAT is 15%, high for a country at this income level, and it comes with a thicket of reduced rates rather than a clean exemption for food, so the tax wedge on a basket is hard to state in one number.
