Pricele #88: Diesel (1 litre) in Czechia 🇨🇿

Diesel and petrol leave the same refinery, so the gap between them in any country is almost entirely tax. Much of Europe spent decades taxing diesel more lightly than petrol to favour freight and diesel cars, and has been closing that gap since 2015. Elsewhere the ordering flips: plenty of countries price diesel above petrol because it is the fuel of business rather than of voters.

Of the 49 countries priced for diesel, Czechia ranks #15 from the top at $2.10, 1.4× the median of $1.55.

Czechia is inside the EU and outside the euro, so a koruna price converts through a rate that moves, and dollar figures here drift for reasons that have nothing to do with Czech shops. Wages are well below western Europe and rising faster. The VAT band is worth reading precisely: the reduced 12% rate covers groceries but explicitly excludes most drinks, so milk and a soft drink sitting next to each other on a shelf carry different tax. Household energy has been among Europe's dearer since 2022, which shows in the electricity and gas rows rather than in the food ones.
