About electricity (100 kWh)
A hundred kilowatt-hours is roughly what a small flat draws in a month, and what it costs ranges from under a dollar-fifty a week to the price of a restaurant meal. Almost none of that spread is the cost of generating the power. It is network charges, carbon and energy taxes, and in several countries a subsidy that holds the household tariff below what the grid actually spends.

Of the 48 countries priced for electricity (100 kWh), Ghana ranks #26 from the top at $19.30, 7% below the median of $20.65.
The cedi has repeatedly lost a large share of its dollar value, so a Ghanaian figure converted today and the same figure converted a year ago are not really comparable, and the dollar column here should be read with that in mind. The headline VAT rate of 15% also understates the wedge: two earmarked levies of 2.5% each, for health insurance and education, sit on top and are not recoverable the way VAT is. Fuel has been fully deregulated since 2015, so pump prices track the exchange rate almost immediately, which is unusual in the region.
