About beer
Beer is heavy, mostly water, and brewed close to where it is drunk, so a shop-bought bottle is a fairly clean read on local costs plus local excise duty. It is also the item where the shop and the bar diverge most: the same bottle carries a markup of three or four times once someone hands it to you across a counter, which is why this figure is the retail one.
Where Peru sits
Of the 42 countries priced for beer, Peru ranks #22 from the top at $1.00, 0% below the median of $1.00.
Peru is a mining exporter with one of the steadier currencies in Latin America, which makes its dollar figures more durable than Argentina's or Colombia's. Domestic food is cheap and largely home-grown, and Lima's much-praised restaurant scene is invisible in national averages. The IGV runs at 18% and applies broadly, so the consumption-tax wedge on ordinary purchases is higher than in Mexico, where food is zero-rated. Pump prices are close to unsubsidised, which puts Peruvian fuel above its Andean neighbours and roughly at world levels.
